Ablekuma North rerun: NPP campaigns despite initial boycott

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has begun campaigning in the Ablekuma North Constituency ahead of the parliamentary rerun scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025, Citi News can confirm.

The rerun, which affects 19 polling stations, was ordered by the Electoral Commission (EC) to address disputes over the authenticity of results from the December 2024 general elections.

The party’s renewed engagement marks a significant reversal from its earlier position to boycott the process. The NPP had initially insisted that its parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, was the legitimate winner of the original vote and accused the EC of attempting to subvert the will of the people by calling for a rerun.

The party’s change of course comes just a day after the Accra High Court dismissed an application filed by Nana Akua Afriyie seeking to halt the rerun.

At a press conference held on July 8, 2025, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong reaffirmed the party’s belief that its candidate emerged victorious in the December polls.

“For us in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), we are resolute and we know that our candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, won the elections with a margin of 414 votes. This is based on facts and figures,” he stated.

Frimpong also stressed that the NPP’s National Executive Committee had resolved not to be cowed by the ongoing controversy, emphasizing the party’s commitment to defending what it believes is its rightful electoral mandate.

He added, “We are not going to be intimidated.”

Citi FM’s Fauzu Masawudu, who visited the constituency, reported that hundreds of NPP supporters were actively campaigning ahead of the rerun.

In interactions with some of them, they indicated that the Electoral Commission had retained Nana Akua Afriyie’s picture on the ballot paper, which reinforced their decision to proceed with campaigning ahead of Friday’s election.

The rerun is expected to be closely contested, with tensions still running high following months of legal and political wrangling over the results.
