Agradaa was jailed because of her personality -Lawyer

Richard Asare Baffour, legal counsel for former traditional priestess turned evangelist, Patricia Asiedua Asiamah—popularly known as Nana Agradaa—has condemned the 15-year prison sentence handed to his client, calling it unjust and swayed by public opinion.

Nana Agradaa was convicted and sentenced by the Circuit Court in Accra on Thursday, July 3, for offences including charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretence.

The court found that in 2022, she used a televised broadcast to mislead viewers by falsely claiming to have spiritual powers capable of doubling money.

Multiple victims, enticed by her claims, reportedly handed over significant sums in anticipation of miraculous financial returns, which never materialised.

Speaking on Eyewitness News with Sammi Wiafe, Mr. Baffour Awuah argued that the sentence was disproportionately harsh and rooted more in Agradaa’s controversial public persona than in the legal merits of the case.

“We believe that Agradaa has been jailed not because of what she did, but who she is,” he stated. “We believe that Agradaa has been loud on social media, she has stepped on several toes, and the kind of language she uses is not palatable. Some people don’t like her. All of those things came into play.”

He described the court’s decision as a “travesty of justice,” claiming his client did not receive a fair trial and that bias played a significant role in the outcome.

Mr. Awuah also hinted at plans to challenge the verdict, saying the legal team is considering all available options for appeal.
