Ernest Kumi’s wife not contesting Akwatia seat – Eastern Regional NPP

The Eastern Regional Executive Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has firmly refuted rumours circulating on social media suggesting that Mrs. Mavis Kumi, widow of the late Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Kumi, is preparing to contest the vacant parliamentary seat.

In a press release signed by Eastern Regional NPP Chairman Jeff Konadu Addo on Tuesday, July 15, the Party described the claims and the accompanying campaign flyers as false, misleading, and “deserving of the utmost contempt.”

“We wish to categorically state that this information is false, misleading, and should be treated with the utmost contempt it deserves,” the statement said.

According to the NPP leadership, the Party has been in close contact with Mrs. Kumi and her family following the passing of Ernest Kumi, and she has made her position clear.

“She has unequivocally communicated that she has no interest in contesting the seat or participating in active politics at this time. Her current focus… is to mourn her husband with dignity and in peace,” the release added.

The Party called on its members, supporters, and the general public to disregard the unauthorised flyer and avoid spreading false information, particularly during a period of mourning.

“Misinformation of this nature only adds pain to an already grieving family… such conduct must be strongly discouraged,” the statement noted.

The late Ernest Kumi was remembered in the statement as a “committed patriot and loyal servant” of both the NPP and the people of Akwatia.

The Party urged all well-wishers to honour his legacy with truth and dignity, and to uphold its core values during this time.

“Let us uphold the values of unity, decorum, and integrity that our Party stands for,” Jeff Konadu Addo emphasised.

The Eastern Regional leadership also encouraged the public to continue offering prayers and support to the bereaved family, and to focus on celebrating Ernest Kumi’s legacy rather than engaging in political speculation.
