Issah Fuseini: Ablekuma North rerun decision bizarre and surprising

Former Member of Parliament for Okaikwei North, Issah Fuseini, has expressed surprise over the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun the parliamentary election in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency, following disputes over the authenticity of results from the December 7, 2024, general election.

His reaction comes in the wake of public controversy and resistance from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which has described the EC’s directive as “unjust.” The party also denies that any consensus was reached during consultations leading up to the EC’s decision to rerun the polls in the affected areas.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue with Sammie Wiafe, Issah Fuseini labelled the EC’s move as “bizarre and surprising,” though he indicated the NPP would not take the law into its own hands.

“I was very surprised on July 2, when the EC came out with that directive. It’s a very bizarre and surprising decision that the EC has arrived at. For us, as NPP, we will not resort to any chaotic situation, like our General Secretary, Justin Kodua said, we will resort to the law courts to have our matter heard. What the EC is doing, the thinking that went on in arriving at this conclusion, we cannot accept, we cannot comprehend,” he said.

He further questioned the reasoning behind the EC’s decision, suggesting that it may have been influenced by recent public statements made by key government figures.

“We have seen the National Chairman of the NDC, Asiedu Nketia, on TV saying that after they are done with the judiciary, the next stage will be dealing with the EC.”

In a statement issued on July 2, 2025, the Election Management Body (EMB) explained that its decision followed extensive consultations and a review of the electoral process in the affected areas.

According to the EC, the rerun is necessary because, although scanned results from the 19 polling stations had been approved by party agents, they were not verified by the respective Presiding Officers, as required under electoral procedures.

The rerun will be conducted in 19 out of the 37 polling stations in the constituency, as the remaining 18 were not affected by the dispute.

The rerun in the 19 polling stations is expected to be closely monitored amid heightened political tension and scrutiny from both major parties.
