The Founder and General Overseer of Action Chapel International, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, has clarified that Ghana’s inaugural National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, held on July 1, 2025, though initiated by President John Dramani Mahama, was the product of extensive consultations and collaboration across religious and traditional leadership.
The maiden edition of the National Day of Prayer aimed to promote national unity, spiritual reflection, and renewed hope amid Ghana’s ongoing socio-economic challenges.
The event brought together religious leaders, political figures, civil society organisations, and citizens from all walks of life. It featured interfaith prayers focused on peace, economic recovery, moral renewal, and national cohesion.
Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV with Bernard Avle on Monday, July 7, Archbishop Duncan-Williams noted that while the initiative came from the President, its planning and execution involved broad-based input from key national stakeholders.
“I believe that this time around, looking back to then, and now, I believe that one of the initiatives of the President and the team working was to mobilise all, the religious council, from the Catholic Bishops, the Christian Council, Pentecostal Council and get all the bodies involved and even involving the Muslims, our brothers, we brought all of them,” he said.
He further emphasised that the process was not unilateral but inclusive, ensuring the participation of traditional authorities and the Muslim community.
“There were a lot of consultations that took place. They went to consult the traditional rulers and also the chief Imams and all, then the religious bodies. So it wasn’t just the decision of the President, it was his initiative. But the strategy was to get everyone involved. All stakeholders must be involved,” he added.
The National Day of Prayer was marked with a Christian interdenominational service held at the forecourt of the State House, while the Islamic prayer session took place at the National Mosque in Accra.
