No nationwide blackout on July 13 – Energy Ministry clarifies

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has dismissed reports suggesting that Ghana will experience a nationwide power outage on Sunday, July 13, describing such claims as inaccurate and misleading.

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, had announced that there may be temporary power supply interruptions on Sunday, July 13, 2025 due to a scheduled shutdown by ENI to increase gas production and carry out maintenance works on its plants but reports suggested otherwise.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Wednesday July 9, Richmond Rockson, Spokesperson and Head of Communication at the Ministry, clarified that while temporary interruptions in power supply may occur due to scheduled maintenance by ENI, there are no plans for a nationwide blackout or return to widespread “dumsor.”

“I have seen some misreporting from some media houses that there will be a nationwide blackout. That is not what the Minister said. That is inaccurate; that is falsehood,” Rockson stated.

“He [Energy Minister] said that because of that, there is a possibility that we may have interruptions in power supply, and the Ministry has put in place measures to ensure that we don’t have any nationwide dumsor or any dumsor as people are speculating.”
