NPP calls on international community to intervene in Ablekuma North rerun

The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has appealed to the international and diplomatic community to intervene in what the party describes as an unlawful decision by the Electoral Commission (EC) to rerun parliamentary elections in the Ablekuma North constituency.

The EC has scheduled a rerun in 19 polling stations within the constituency for July 11, citing issues with unverified pink sheets. However, the NPP strongly opposes this move and has vowed not to participate in the rerun on Friday.

Speaking to Citi News on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, Haruna Mohammed urged diplomatic actors and the media to speak out against the EC’s actions, which he described as unjust and in contempt of the courts.

“An election that has been conducted and won cannot be redone simply because someone claims victory through threats. We want the international and diplomatic community to understand what is happening.

“The media must shine a light on this and ensure the right thing is done. We cannot support illegality or injustice,” he said.

Earlier, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong also declared that the party would not participate in the rerun. He insisted that the NPP’s candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, legitimately won the 2024 parliamentary election with a margin of 414 votes.

Speaking at a press briefing on the same day, Mr. Kodua accused the EC of attempting to subvert the will of the people.

“The NPP is firm in its stance. Our candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, won the election based on facts and figures. During our National Executive Committee meeting, we agreed that under no circumstances will we participate in a rerun,” he said.

He further called on the EC to comply with the court’s directive by completing the collation process and declaring Nana Akua Afriyie as the elected Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North.
