A robbery attack at Buduatta Junction on the Winneba Highway on the night of Saturday, July 5, has left three passengers injured and receiving treatment at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba.
Police have confirmed the arrest of one suspect in connection with the incident, which targeted unsuspecting commuters along the busy stretch.
According to Citi News sources within the Central East Regional Police Command, the robbers ambushed vehicles and robbed several passengers of their valuables, including cash and mobile phones.
The situation escalated when the robbers opened fire on a Toyota Hiace minibus whose driver attempted to evade the scene. The gunfire resulted in injuries to three passengers onboard.
A swift police response led to the arrest of one individual found in possession of mobile phones believed to have been stolen from victims during the attack. The suspect is currently in police custody and assisting with investigations.
This latest attack adds to growing concerns over the safety of commuters along that corridor. The Potsin Junction–Okyereko stretch of the highway, in particular, has become notorious for robbery incidents, prompting enhanced police patrols in recent months.
However, police say the robbers have now changed tactics, targeting less-secured areas such as Buduatta Junction, where there is minimal police presence.
Earlier, Central East Regional Police Commander ACP Francis Nchor told Citi News on Sunday, July 6, that ongoing road construction and the installation of speed ramps on the highway have made it easier for criminals to strike while hampering rapid police response.
Authorities say efforts are underway to improve visibility and security along the highway to prevent further incidents.
