‎Sam George calls for 30% reduction in DStv prices amid Cedi gains

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George (MP), has called on MultiChoice Ghana to implement a 30% reduction in DStv subscription prices, citing the Ghanaian cedi’s significant appreciation and growing public dissatisfaction with current rates.

In a meeting held on July 4, with a delegation from DStv led by Dr. Keabetswe Modimoeng, Group Executive for Regulatory and Corporate Affairs, the Minister emphasised the government’s responsibility to address public concerns.

He noted that despite a 30% improvement in the cedi’s value over the past five months, DStv prices remain unchanged, prompting frustration among consumers.

George stressed that while MultiChoice has introduced promotional offers, subscribers prefer a direct and permanent price cut.

He further highlighted widespread complaints about outdated content, with many customers stating that only the Premier League remains appealing.

To address these concerns, the Minister requested that MultiChoice Ghana formally respond by July 21 with a proposal reflecting the expected price reduction. This would allow for continued dialogue before the end of the month.

The Minister also raised concerns about the rise of cross-border piracy involving unauthorised DStv boxes, which undermine local operators and reduce government revenue.

He emphasised the need for stronger anti-piracy measures and stricter regulatory compliance.

Additionally, George advocated for increased local content, noting that it would generate employment and support Ghana’s creative industry.

He announced that the government is developing a new broadcasting bill aimed at gradually increasing local content requirements across platforms.

Dr. Modimoeng acknowledged the government’s concerns and expressed appreciation for the constructive engagement.

He confirmed MultiChoice’s commitment to respond by the stated deadline and to balance consumer expectations with business viability. He also reaffirmed the company’s dedication to fighting piracy and updating stakeholders on its progress.

The meeting highlighted the government’s commitment to consumer protection, regulatory accountability, and the promotion of local content in Ghana’s media landscape.
