Authorities in the Ashanti Region are intensifying efforts to prevent flooding and potential disease outbreaks as the rainy season sets in.
The region, long plagued by perennial flooding due to inadequate drainage and indiscriminate waste disposal, is implementing precautionary measures aimed at protecting lives and property.
Officials say the situation remains alarming, with recurrent floods placing a heavy financial burden on local assemblies and the government. Relief agencies, including the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), are often called in to assist victims—an expense authorities say could be avoided through consistent sanitation efforts.

To address the issue, and in line with President John Dramani Mahama’s directive designating the first Saturday of every month as National Sanitation Day, residents and officials in Kumasi came together to clean and desilt choked drains and gutters.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Asokwa, Amoh Kamel, issued a strong warning to residents, urging them to maintain cleanliness around their homes and businesses or face sanctions.
“I will urge those living in the Municipality to clean their frontage. If you were not able to join us, you can clean your frontage, including where you do your business, and sell items.”
