The Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly has announced a joint operation with the Ghana Police Service to carry out a new decongestion exercise at the Agbogbloshie onion market.
The site, once home to thousands of scrap dealers, gained global notoriety as one of the dirtiest e-waste dumpsites due to the widespread burning of electronic waste.
On July 1, 2021, the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, with support from armed police, demolished structures and evicted about 10,000 scrap dealers as part of a major cleanup exercise. A section of the land was later earmarked for the construction of a district hospital under the government’s Agenda 111 initiative.
However, four years later, scrap dealers have returned to the site, reclaiming parts of the land and sparking renewed concerns about environmental degradation and public health risks.
Speaking at a meeting between the Greater Accra Regional Minister and Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) on Thursday, August 28, 2025, Ablekuma Central Municipal Chief Executive Frank Nkansah described the development as troubling and assured residents of urgent action.
“Together with the regional minister, we have decided to decongest the Agbogbloshie onion site again. She has given us a representative, and the IGP has also provided a team to work with.
Two weeks from now, we will also clean the South Industrial Area, together with the Ghana Prisons Service,” he said.
