Akwatia by-election: We’re confident in state security – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed full confidence in the security arrangements ahead of the upcoming Akwatia by-election, urging calm and adherence to the laid-down processes.

Speaking in an interview on the Channel One Newsroom on Tuesday August 19, Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the NDC, Rashid Sofo Tanko-Computer said the party is satisfied with the security briefing it received from the police and has no plans to deploy its own protection, contrary to recent comments by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

NPP National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye had revealed on Citi Eyewitness News that the party would be putting in place internal mechanisms to “protect” its members during the by-election on Tuesday, September 2 following the party’s dissatisfaction with the handling of violence during the recent Ablekuma North election rerun.

While Nana B insisted that the NPP’s self-protection plans are lawful and non-violent, Tanko cautioned that such an approach could spark unnecessary tension if not handled responsibly.

“We have full confidence in the state security. We were with them at the Kumawu by-election, we were with them at the Assin North by-election, and we saw what happened at Ablekuma North.

“We are satisfied with the briefing that the security gave us today. The setup they put out there clearly shows that they want to protect lives and property at Akwatia.”

“My brothers and sisters in the NPP must be clear to themselves — it takes two to tango. When you have a predetermined mind that ‘I am coming to do so and so,’ then expect a reprisal from your action.”
