The Gbele Resource Reserve has officially implemented its annual National Closed Season, a complete ban on hunting, capturing, and trading in wild animals from August 1 to December 1.
The event, which was held on the theme for the 2025 campaign, “United Against Wildlife Crime,” coincided with the reserve’s 50th anniversary, highlighting the ban as a critical measure to protect Ghana’s wildlife.
Stakeholders were urged to move from awareness to action in preserving Ghana’s natural wealth. Illegal poaching, logging, and encroachment remain persistent threats to reserves like Gbele, which is one of the largest lesser-known game reserves in Ghana.
Speaking on behalf of the Director General of the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission, Mr Umaru Farouk Dubiure, the Director of Operations said the ban, which is mandated by the Wildlife Resource Management Act 2023, is designed to give wild animals a “breathing space” during their vulnerable breeding season.

He said this is crucial for replenishing populations, ensuring long-term sustainability, and preventing over-exploitation that could drive key species to extinction.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Sissala East, Bening Adamu Yakubu, acknowledged the challenges facing the reserve, including illegal hunting, poaching, and encroachment.

He appealed to all stakeholders, including traditional authorities and local communities, to join the fight against wildlife crime and support the ban.
In a speech delivered on behalf of the Bui Power Authority CEO, Mr. Chrisentus B. Kuunifaa emphasised the vital role of protected areas in Ghana’s climate action and energy security, citing the Gbele Reserve’s contribution to sustaining the Bui Generating Station.
He highlighted the Wildlife Division’s work in providing ecosystem services, preserving cultural heritage, and promoting eco-tourism, noting the significant number of visitors to Ghana’s national parks in 2024.
