GoldBod announces temporary bonus to boost local gold sales

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has announced a special temporary bonus for licensed miners across the country in a move aimed at motivating local producers and curbing gold smuggling.

Effective Wednesday, August 27, 2025, licensed miners will receive an additional GHC832 per pound of gold sold to GoldBod.

This means a pound of gold, which ordinarily trades at GHC8,868 on the local market, is now selling at GHC9,700.

According to the Board, the initiative follows persistent concerns from licensed miners about the decline in local gold prices in recent months, largely attributed to the continuous appreciation of the Ghana Cedi.

GoldBod explained that the bonus is designed to ensure that miners, who have contributed significantly to the country’s increased gold output and foreign exchange earnings, are not disadvantaged by the stronger local currency.

To guarantee smooth implementation, the Board has resourced and instructed its licensed traders nationwide to ensure prompt payment of the bonus to all miners who sell their gold through official channels.

“This measure is both a motivation and a safeguard. We want miners to feel valued for their role in strengthening the economy, while also discouraging smuggling,” said Prince Kwame Minka, Media Relations Officer at GoldBod.
