Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has announced President John Dramani Mahama’s plan to provide employment opportunities for residents who played key roles in recovering the bodies of the August 6 helicopter crash in the Dampia Range Forest Reserve in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking on behalf of the President during a visit to the Sikaman community on Wednesday, August 27, he commended the bravery of local farmers and hunters who risked their lives to recover the remains of the deceased officials.
According to him, the government would ensure that their sacrifices are rewarded through permanent employment in sectors aligned with their skills and interests.
“The President has instructed that the ages and capabilities of the men who showed courage in this rescue operation should be assessed. Those interested in joining the army, police, NADMO, or any security service will be employed accordingly.
“If anyone is not within the age bracket for these institutions but prefers farming, the government will support him,” Mr. Nketiah stated.
In addition to the job pledges, the President donated GH¢100,000 to the rescuers as appreciation for their efforts and GH¢20,000 to the chiefs to support the performance of traditional rites for the victims. The government also promised to complete ongoing community centres in Sikaman as part of efforts to boost local development.
Mr. Nketiah further disclosed that contractors have been directed to expedite work on the main road linking the communities, saying the project will serve as a lasting reminder of the government’s recognition of the people’s sacrifices.
The helicopter crash, which occurred in the Dampia Range Forest Reserve in the Adansi Akrofrom District, claimed the lives of eight high-profile government officials, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Minister for Environment, Science and Technology Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.
