The Dean of the Oti Regional MMDCEs and Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Krachi West, Prosper Addo, has called on the Ministry of Health to, as a matter of urgency, supply typhoid vaccines to the region.
His appeal follows a sharp rise in confirmed typhoid cases. The Oti Region recorded 10,233 cases in the first quarter of 2025, about 5% of the region’s population, but the figure has more than doubled to 22,261, largely due to poor sanitation and unsafe drinking water.
Speaking on the Channel One Newsroom on Wednesday, August 27, Mr. Addo partly attributed the crisis to the lack of potable water and poor sanitation across the districts. He warned that unless swift action is taken, the region risks an even greater public health disaster.
Mr. Addo further underscored the need for the Ministry to post additional medical staff and deploy public health experts to the region. According to him, without urgent intervention, local health facilities could soon be overwhelmed by the escalating cases, resulting in more casualties and fatalities.
“We are calling on the Ministry of Health, that the various CHPS compounds, clinics, and hospitals within our jurisdiction are resourced with the typhoid vaccines so that the people can be vaccinated. If nothing is done, next year around this time, the figures will be alarming because the Bagre dam is being spilt and the water is coming.
“It is the same water that the people are living on. Some people have it now, and some other people will be coming into contact with it. They should get us experts who will be manning these health facilities. As early as possible, they should bring us the vaccines,” he stated.
