Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George, has ordered an immediate suspension of the enforcement exercise by the Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission (PCSRC) and the Ghana Police against unlicensed delivery riders.

Announcing the directive in a post on X on Thursday, August 21, the Minister admitted that the exercise was consistent with existing laws regulating the use of motorbikes for courier services. However, he stressed that wider stakeholder consultations and public education must precede its implementation.

“I have directed this afternoon [August 21] an immediate halt to the ongoing enforcement action by the Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission.

“We must enforce the law with a humane face to it,” he stated, adding that he would meet stakeholders in the coming days to agree on a roadmap for enforcement.

The decision came hours after a viral video captured chaotic scenes near the National Theatre in Accra, where aggrieved delivery riders clashed with PCSRC officials following the seizure of dozens of unlicensed motorcycles.
