Two people have been confirmed dead and several others injured following violent clashes during the Kpokpoi Sprinkling Ceremony in the Teshie Traditional Area on Tuesday, August 26, 2025.

The Ledzokuku Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) said the disturbances erupted after an otherwise peaceful start to the annual festival, which saw the youth jogging, singing, and dancing in the early hours of the morning.

According to the Council, rival factions engaged in violent confrontations, pelting stones and firing gunshots. Police intervened to restore order, allowing the Paramount Chief of Teshie, Gbetsoolo Nii Ashitey Akonfrah III, to perform his traditional rites.

However, renewed clashes later in the morning escalated the situation, leaving several people with gunshot wounds. Victims were rushed to Lekma Hospital and Family Health Hospital, where two men, 30-year-old Eddy Blessing and 27-year-old Patrick Maamah Martey Fio, were pronounced dead on arrival. Another victim is in critical condition.

The disturbances also triggered chaos at the hospitals, as distraught relatives besieged the emergency units. Security officers and health authorities worked together to contain the situation and maintain calm.

MUSEC has assured the public that investigations are ongoing to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

In a statement, the Council extended condolences to the bereaved families and appealed for peace among the factions.

“We call on all residents and traditional factions in Teshie to remain calm and support the ongoing investigations to ensure lasting peace in the community,” MUSEC noted.
