A total of 224 licensed radio stations across Ghana are not currently in operation, according to the latest report by the National Communications Authority (NCA).

Bernard Amissah-Ocran, Acting Director of Engineering at the National Communications Authority, revealed that out of 763 authorised FM stations nationwide, only 539 are currently on air. The remaining 224 have not commenced operations or are off-air.

He made this known during the Broadcasting at the Crossroads forum, hosted by the Africa Media Bureau in Accra on Friday, September 26.

The NCA’s second-quarter 2025 report offers a detailed overview of FM station distribution across all 16 regions of the country.

The data shows that the Ashanti Region has the highest number of authorised stations, with 116 in total. Of these, 85 are operational and 31 are inactive. The Western Region follows with 88, with 59 in operation and 29 inactive.

The Greater Accra Region follows with 84 authorised stations, 71 of which are on air, while 13 are not. Bono Region has 59 stations, with 46 currently operational.

At the other end of the spectrum, the North East Region has the fewest licensed stations, with 13 in total and only seven on air. Other regions including Western, Central, Eastern, Northern, and Volta also recorded a significant number of inactive stations.

The data also categorises the 763 authorised FM stations by type. These include 31 public stations, 155 community stations, 5 campus stations, 548 commercial stations, and 24 foreign-authorised stations.
