The recent communal clash in Gbiniyiri and surrounding communities in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region has forced the closure of 44 out of 150 schools.
The conflict, which erupted between Gonjas and Brifos over a parcel of land in Gbiniyiri, has disrupted teaching and learning across five circuit areas, affecting more than 5,000 pupils.
Savannah Regional Director of Education, Bright A. Lawoe, confirmed that 13 teachers have abandoned their posts out of fear for their lives.
“Thirteen of our staff members cannot work and have gone into hiding because of this unfortunate situation.
“We have advised them to stay away until we receive assurances from the Security Council that it is safe to return,” he said.
Mr. Lawoe appealed to authorities to intensify efforts to restore calm so that academic activities can resume fully.
