Gov’t buys tomatoes, onions from farmers in Asante Akim North

Farmers in the Asante Akim North Municipality of the Ashanti Region have confirmed the purchase of some boxes of tomatoes and bags of onions from them, in line with a recent government directive.

On September 15, 2025, President John Mahama directed the purchase of 1,000 boxes of tomatoes and 2,000 bags of onions from farmers in the municipality. The move was aimed at addressing concerns over post-harvest losses and farmers’ lack of access to reliable markets.

Although several media outlets earlier reported that the produce had already been bought, Citi News confirmed that the directive had not yet been carried out. However, after several follow-ups, assurances were given that the process would soon commence.

In an interview on Wednesday, September 24, the 2024 Municipal Best Farmer, Prince Obeng Amoako, confirmed that a government delegation visited the area on Tuesday, September 23, to buy some of the produce.

“Yeah, it’s true. They came to Awukugua to buy some of the bags, not all. They bought 800 mini bags of onions from us, and I learned they went to the tomato market too, to buy some of the tomatoes. That is the information I have,” he said.

Mr. Amoako, however, could not confirm whether the quantity of tomatoes purchased met the directive of 1,000 boxes. He disclosed that officials assured them they would return to buy the remaining onions to meet the full target of 2,000 bags.

He expressed appreciation to the government for the intervention and appealed for further support to ease the challenges faced by farmers in the municipality.

“I am very grateful to the President and the MP, MCE, and all the leadership here. I’m just appealing to them to still come to our aid and buy the remaining stocks for us,” he added.
