GTEC shuts down Royal Nursing College over expired accreditation

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed the Royal Nursing College in Kumasi to cease operations immediately after the institution’s accreditation was found to have expired nearly four years ago.

In a letter dated September 12, 2025, and signed by the Director-General of GTEC, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, the Commission said the college’s accreditation expired on December 16, 2021. It stressed that the institution cannot continue operating as a tertiary institution until it regains full accreditation from both GTEC and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

The directive followed a meeting held on August 28, 2025, between officials of the college, GTEC, the NMC, and representatives from the Ministry of Health’s Health Training Institutions Unit.

Per the directive, the college has been ordered to:

  1. Submit staff documentation — including appointment letters, CVs, and proof of regular remuneration for management and teaching staff — to verify the employment status of personnel.

  2. Cease operations immediately — and work with its mentor institution, the University of Cape Coast (UCC), to develop a teach-out plan for students admitted between 2021 and 2024.

  3. Suspend admissions — and halt intake of new students until accreditation is fully restored.

The Commission also instructed the college to address deficiencies identified by regulators and submit verifiable evidence of corrective measures. A joint verification visit by GTEC and the NMC will follow before any consideration of restoring accreditation.

GTEC emphasised that the matter should be treated with “the utmost urgency and seriousness it deserves.”
