A member of the Communication Team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Wonder Madilo, has criticised a ruling delivered by a judge in the Abronye case, describing it as flawed and misguided.
According to Mr. Madilo, the ruling reflects a worrying trend where some judges, in an attempt to appear firm, end up overstepping their bounds.
This comes after NPP Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Boffoe, widely known as Abronye, was on September 12, 2025, remanded into police custody again for one week by an Accra Circuit Court.
He faces two charges: Publishing false news and offensive conduct likely to disturb the peace. The charges stem from comments he allegedly made on television, claiming that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) attended National Democratic Congress (NDC) meetings and referring to the current IGP, Tetteh Yohuno, as the “most corrupt” in the country’s history.
In delivering his ruling, the judge referenced George Orwell’s Animal Farm to illustrate that some individuals are above the law, a point made in relation to Abronye’s remarks about the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, September 15, 2025, Mr Madilo said: “In all humility, we are quick to admit that the judge erred in his ruling. Indeed, we must be mindful of the history of this judge. Many people are quick to say that he is an NDC judge. But this is not the NDC, and will never be the NDC beyond this.”
He pointed out that the judge in question had, in the past, made similar rulings that attracted public attention.
“If you read the ruling, he stated that somewhere in 2023, he remanded an NDC activist for insulting former President Akufo-Addo. At the time, he was celebrated. It is the same judge who remanded Chairman Wontumi’s radio presenter. Because he has been empowered in the past, he feels that by doing some of these things, he is seen as a good judge or a strong judge. But now, he has gone overboard,” Mr. Madilo said.
The NDC communicator further argued that such conduct underscores the concerns of President John Dramani Mahama about the excesses of state institutions.
“This is one of the reasons why President Mahama is very mindful about the excesses of some of these institutions, and that is where almost every sector of the country has gotten to,” he added.
