N/R: Tamale Technical University students protest poor sanitation, lack of dev’t projects

Students of Tamale Technical University (TaTU) have staged a protest on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, demanding improved welfare conditions and urgent infrastructure development on campus.

According to the students, management has failed to account for development levies charged in their fees over the years, insisting that no visible projects have been initiated despite continuous payments.

Speaking during the protest, Mahamudu Musah, the PRO of the Students Representative Council (SRC) accused the university administration of neglect.

“We are hitting the street to demand accountability and developmental projects from management. Over the years, students have paid their fees, and if you look at the fee structure, there is a component called the developmental levy. Students have paid this for years, but there hasn’t been a single project on this campus championed by management,” Musah said.

They also highlighted worsening sanitation conditions, describing them as a major health and safety concern.

“Sanitation is a challenge that students face. Open defecation is at an alarming rate. As we speak, there is no proper washroom for students, and now many are forced to use the bush. Sometimes, lecturers are compelled to close classes early because the stench from nearby washrooms is unbearable. Why must we go through this as a university?” another protester lamented.
