PNC, LPG withdraw from Tamale Central by-election; NDC to go unopposed

The by-election in Tamale Central has taken an unexpected turn after two opposition candidates pulled out of the race shortly after filing their nominations.

A trusted source within the Electoral Commission (EC) confirmed to Channel One News that the People’s National Convention (PNC) and Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) candidates, who had earlier completed the filing process on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, have officially withdrawn their candidacies.

Their withdrawal leaves the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the sole candidate in the contest, effectively clearing the path for the party to retain the seat.

The Tamale Metro EC Director, Anaba Samson, had earlier disclosed in an interview that five prospective candidates — representing the NDC, LPG, PNC, All People’s Congress (APC), and an Independent candidate — were expected to file nominations. However, by the 5:00 p.m. deadline, only three parties — the NDC, LPG, and PNC — had successfully filed.

The surprise withdrawal of the PNC and LPG contestants ostensibly gives the NDC the clear chance to secure the seat without contest.

The Electoral Commission is expected to formally announce the updated status of the contest in the coming days.
