The Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, has encouraged young girls to pursue careers in aviation, emphasising that the industry offers limitless opportunities for women who are determined to make an impact.
She made the call when she delivered the keynote address at the 2025 Girls in Aviation Day celebration, organised by Women in Aviation International – Ghana Chapter, in Accra on Saturday October 25.
The event, held under the theme “Inspiring the Next Generation of Women in Aviation,” brought together students from several senior high schools, including Tema Senior High, Methodist Day Senior High, Peki Senior High, Accra High, Corpus Christi Senior High, and Africa Science School.
In her address, Mrs. Opare commended Women in Aviation Ghana for their continuous efforts in inspiring and empowering young women to explore opportunities within the aviation sector.
“Aviation is not just about flying planes. It is about teamwork, innovation, service, and connection — connecting people, cultures, and economies,” she said.
“It is an industry that thrives on passion, discipline, and a desire to make a difference in people’s lives through the power of travel and technology.”
The GACL Managing Director noted that more women are now rising into leadership roles within the aviation industry, serving as proof that with determination and equal opportunity, women can excel in traditionally male-dominated fields.
She urged the participating students to remain curious, disciplined, and committed to learning as they pursue their dreams.
“Every new skill you acquire, every subject you explore, brings you one step closer to your dreams. Education is the key that opens doors, and diligence is what keeps them open,” Mrs. Opare advised.
Mrs. Opare further encouraged the young ladies to take advantage of mentorship opportunities and explore the diverse career paths available in aviation, including piloting, engineering, air traffic control, and airport management.
She expressed optimism that many of the students present would, in the near future, return as aviation professionals leading teams and inspiring others.
The event was attended by notable personalities, including Madam Juliet Okae, President of Women in Aviation – Ghana Chapter; Madam Elsie Adikie Okutu-Bediako, Station Manager of United Airlines; Madam Eloina Baddoo, General Manager of Delta Air Lines GSA; and Madam Valerie Suberg, Senior Manager of Aircraft Maintenance at Orbis International’s Flying Eye Hospital.
The annual Girls in Aviation Day seeks to expose young women to career opportunities within the aviation industry and encourage gender inclusivity in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
