NDC must focus on governance, not flagbearer for 2028 – Hamza Suhuyini

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team, Hamza Suhuyini, says the party’s immediate focus must be on delivering on its promises to Ghanaians, not early competition over who will lead the NDC into the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on Citi FM’s The Big Issue on Saturday, October 4, amid growing debate over succession following a new Global InfoAnalytics poll that places Haruna Iddrisu as the frontrunner to succeed President John Dramani Mahama, Suhuyini said the NDC must remain committed to governance and delivery.

“For us in the NDC, I think that the objective now is to stay true to the social contract that we signed with the good people of this country, based on which they gave us an overwhelming mandate on 7th December 2024,” he said.

“That should be the focus of any operative of the NDC, and of course His Excellency John Dramani Mahama.”

He added that President Mahama’s performance in his current term would be decisive for both his legacy and the party’s long-term political fortunes.

“His performance will go a long way to impact on our political future,” Suhuyini stated.

The latest Global InfoAnalytics poll ranks Tamale South MP Haruna Iddrisu as the leading contender to lead the NDC in 2028, with 30% support, followed by NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia at 24% and Finance Minister Ato Forson at 18%. Other figures, including Julius Debrah and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, trail behind.

The poll also suggests a tight race if Haruna Iddrisu does not contest, with Asiedu Nketia and Ato Forson running neck and neck—particularly among core party supporters and in key swing regions.
