United Party will shock Ghana’s political establishment – Buaben Asamoa

Interim General Secretary of the newly formed United Party, also known as UP Plus, Yaw Buaben Asamoa has stated that while the party is an emerging political force, it should not be boxed in as just another third-party alternative.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday October 18, he emphasised that UP Plus is not merely riding on the popularity of its founder, Alan Kyerematen, but is focused on building a broad-based political movement that directly addresses Ghana’s economic challenges.

“We are an emergent force, but we are not the sole third force. This is the difference. This is what will shock the duopoly,” he said, referring to the long-standing political dominance of the NPP and NDC.

“This is not Alan Kyerematen’s United Party or some personal third force. No, no, no. This is a party that is going to galvanise opinion around a problem — the economy. Because neither of the two [NPP and NDC] have been able to progress us in the area of the economy. We are a centrist party.”

His comments build on remarks made earlier by the party’s Director of Communications, Solomon Owusu, during an appearance on Channel One Newsroom. Owusu described UP Plus as a political platform aimed at uniting the best minds from all corners of Ghana’s political and civil society landscape.

“It signifies a party that is ready to depose the duopoly that has led this country into its worst ebb,” Owusu said, stressing that the UP Plus mission goes beyond winning power to reshaping Ghana’s leadership culture. “We have been treated to misgovernance by the NPP and the NDC, and the majority of Ghanaians want to see a change.”

Founded on the principles of inclusivity, competence, and economic transformation, UP Plus is a rebranded version of Alan Kyerematen’s earlier political movement, the Movement for Change. The party officially received its registration certificate from the Electoral Commission on October 3, 2025.

At its launch, party chairman Abubakar Saddique Boniface stated that UP Plus stands for transformational leadership, integrity, and transparency. Alan Kyerematen described the new party as a “new dawn” in Ghanaian politics, promising a government that will prioritize solutions over slogans.

With its centrist positioning and bold rhetoric against the political status quo, UP Plus is expected to play a significant role in the lead-up to Ghana’s 2028 general elections.
