Summon AG to explain harsh bail terms for ex-appointees – Minority demands

The Minority in Parliament has called for the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, to be summoned before the House to explain what they describe as excessively harsh bail conditions imposed on former government appointees currently under investigation for alleged corruption.

According to the caucus, several of the affected individuals have spent weeks in custody because they are unable to meet the high bail requirements set by investigative bodies and sanctioned by the courts.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Friday, November 14, 2025, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin stressed that their request is not an attempt to interfere with judicial proceedings but rather to ensure fairness and accountability in the legal process.

“A bail is imposed mainly based on a charge sheet or the facts of the case, without the other party being fully heard, and that is quite worrying. We are concerned, and we believe that if the Attorney General comes here to brief us on why some of these bail terms were imposed, we will be able to interrogate the matter,” he said.

“It becomes quite serious when a court grants bail, but the accused person remains in custody simply because the conditions are too harsh to meet.”

The Minority insists that the Attorney General’s clarification is necessary to prevent what they describe as potential abuses of prosecutorial discretion and to safeguard the rights of accused persons.
