Techiman South: Rain hindered evidence recovery in 2020 election shootings – Interior Minister

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has revealed that efforts to gather ballistic evidence from the 2020 Techiman South election violence scene were severely hindered by heavy rainfall shortly after the incident.

Addressing the media on the progress of investigations into both the 2020 and 2024 election-related incidents, Muntaka Mubarak explained that the downpour destroyed crucial evidence needed to identify those responsible for the shootings, thereby delaying the investigative process.

“Spent shells could not be retrieved from the scene. In the case of Techiman, the day after the election, it rained heavily and so they couldn’t pick much from the scene and no bullet were retrieved from the bodies of the diseased to assist ballistic examination to identify which weapon caused the injuries or death. It made it difficult to bring finality as to who caused the injuries or deaths for now. However, investigations will continue until justice is done,” he stated.

He assured the public that investigations into the matter are still ongoing, reiterating government’s commitment to justice and fairness.

The Techiman South constituency witnessed two fatalities and six injuries following a shooting incident during the collation of results in the 2020 general elections.
