Tension is escalating in the Agave Traditional Area in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region following the alleged illegal installation and gazetting of a paramount chief and 24 sub-chiefs.

Divisional Wing Chiefs and residents have accused the Woyome brothers, Alfred Agbesi Woyome and Kwabla Mensah Woyome, of unlawfully interfering in the chieftaincy affairs of the area, describing the move as an attack on Agave customs and traditional laws.

The concerns led to a protest on November 24, 2025, where Wing Chiefs, Divisional Chiefs, Sub-Chiefs, Queen Mothers, and community members petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to intervene and halt what they call systematic interference in Agave chieftaincy matters.

At a press conference to remind the government of the petition submitted to the Office of the President, the chiefs of the Agave Traditional Area warned that the situation could further destabilise the area if urgent action is not taken.

They further alleged that the newly installed paramount chief was installed and gazetted under a false identity, a matter they say is currently under police investigation.

The Agave traditional authorities are appealing to the government for swift intervention to restore order and protect the integrity of chieftaincy in the area.

Avafiaga Keteni VI, the front wing chief of the Agave Traditional Area, appealed, “The people are very angry, we don’t want to take the law into our hands. We’re appealing to President John Dramani Mahama and other people to intervene.”
