Bawku Conflict: Otumfuo to brief Mahama after landmark joint mediation

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is expected to brief President John Dramani Mahama on the just-ended mediation process aimed at bringing lasting peace to the protracted Bawku conflict.

President Mahama tasked the Asantehene to lead the high-level peace effort, which many hoped would finally resolve years of tension and instability in the area.

The session held on Monday, December 1, 2025, marked a breakthrough, as both the Kusaasi and Mamprusi factions sat together before the Asantehene for the first time since the mediation began.

Security around the Manhyia Palace was tight, with both groups undergoing strict checks before being escorted into the palace auditorium.

Sources said that Otumfuo listened extensively to submissions from both factions, urging restraint and assuring them of continued collaboration with the Presidency to end the long-standing impasse.

Outside the palace, supporters of the rival groups erupted in jubilation after the meeting. The celebrations briefly escalated into a misunderstanding, prompting swift intervention from police and military personnel. Additional security was deployed to restore calm.

Both factions are now awaiting official communication from the Manhyia Palace on the next steps in the peace process.
