Ghana’s President and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, John Dramani Mahama, has affirmed that the deployment of Army engineers to Jamaica is a symbol of the country’s cordial relationship with the Caribbean nation and the international community.
Following a recent hurricane in Jamaica, a team of Ghana Army engineers, comprising eight officers and 45 soldiers, is being deployed to assist in building shelters and supporting reconstruction efforts.
During a farewell parade for the team at the Jubilee Lounge within Kotoka International Airport on Wednesday, December 17, President Mahama explained that the humanitarian mission will strengthen bilateral ties between Ghana and Jamaica, advising the team to serve with dignity and honour while raising the Ghanaian flag high.
“Your actions will shape how Ghana is perceived abroad. We expect you to uphold professional excellence, show respect for local authorities and communities, exercise integrity and teamwork, protect one another, and return home safely.”
President Mahama also expressed gratitude to the United States for its assistance in airlifting the troops to Jamaica.
“When we conceptualised this mission, one of the main obstacles was the ability to transport the troops to Jamaica. The United States of America stepped forward and provided the airlift capacity needed for the mission.
“I want to thank our friends in the United States once again,” he said, wishing the troops a successful mission and safe return.
