Parliamentary proceedings have been suspended after an uproar erupted on the floor of the House when the Minority caucus blocked Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga from responding to calls for the withdrawal of a letter declaring the Kpandai parliamentary seat vacant.
The disruption followed Parliament’s formal notification to the Electoral Commission on Monday, December 8, 2025, that the seat had become vacant, in line with a High Court ruling ordering a rerun of the constituency’s election.
Minority MPs, dressed in black, chanted patriotic songs, banged tables, and hooted at the Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, who had earlier attempted to maintain order.
The controversy centers on a letter dated December 4, 2025, from the Clerk to Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa informing her of the vacancy, a move Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh described as “out of place” and “unfortunate.” He argued that the letter violated the rule of law and insisted it be withdrawn.
The disruption escalated as Minority members repeatedly obstructed Mahama Ayariga whenever he attempted to make a statement, forcing Speaker Alban Bagbin to suspend proceedings temporarily.
Ahead of the suspension, the Speaker urged MPs to respect the standing orders and indicated that he can only resolve what matter it was after hearing from the leaders of the house.
