Joseph Kwadwo Ofori, Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Kadjebi Branch of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (GTUC), has urged drivers to exercise patience and care during and after the Christmas season to prevent road accidents.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kadjebi, Oti Region, on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, Mr. Ofori said Christmas is a season of joy and celebration—not funerals—and stressed the importance of transporting passengers safely to their destinations.
He noted that the yuletide period usually sees an upsurge in road traffic and accident cases across the country. Excessive speeding, overloading, reckless overtaking, and driving under the influence of alcohol are major causes of festive season accidents, he said.
Mr. Ofori advised drivers to strictly adhere to road traffic regulations, observe approved speed limits, take adequate rest before long journeys, and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy.
He also urged drivers to cooperate with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies deployed to ensure road safety.
Passengers, he added, have a role to play by discouraging reckless driving and reporting irresponsible drivers to transport union leaders or the police. “Safety is a shared responsibility. If drivers and passengers work together, we can reduce accidents and save lives this Christmas,” he said.
Mr. Ofori concluded by wishing all drivers and passengers a peaceful and accident-free yuletide celebration.
