Claims I was favoured for Finance Minister are a petty distraction – Amin Adam

Former Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Karaga, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has issued a sharp rebuttal to claims by the Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, Dr. Stephen Amoah, regarding his appointment as Finance Minister during President Akufo-Addo’s administration.

According to Dr. Amin Adam, the New Patriotic Party’s immediate priority should be preparing former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to win the upcoming elections and govern in the interest of Ghanaians, rather than debating internal claims over past appointments.

He described suggestions that he was favoured for the Finance Minister position as petty and a needless distraction from the party’s broader political mission.

“Our focus is on preparing Dr. Bawumia to become president and govern the country for the benefit of the people. Claims that I was favoured in my appointment are not worth discussing; they are simply pettiness and should not distract us from getting our candidate elected,” he said in an interview on Joy News on Wednesday, January 7.

Dr. Amin Adam also rejected any notion that his appointment was politically convenient, stressing that his long-standing service within the party and independent political choices contradict claims of preferential treatment.

“If my appointment was based on favouritism, then people should know where I am coming from. I have been in this party for a very long time, and those who know me know that I did not support Nana Akufo-Addo, I supported Kufuor and Alan Cash,” he added.

Following the removal of Ken Ofori-Atta, Dr. Amoah briefly served as Deputy Minister for Finance, while Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam was appointed as the substantive minister—a decision Dr. Amoah publicly questioned, insisting he was better suited for the role.

Dr. Amoah, during a campaign event for Presidential hopeful Kennedy Agyapong, alleged that although former President Nana Akufo-Addo initially preferred him for the position, the appointment was blocked on ethnic grounds, claiming pressure was mounted for a northerner to be named Finance Minister instead.
