Ghana has begun exploring new maritime and trade opportunities with the United States following a high-level working visit to the Port of Philadelphia aimed at strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries.

The delegation included the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, and other government officials, who toured the port and received briefings on its operations, logistics, infrastructure, and role in global supply chains.

Speaking during the visit, Ghana’s Ambassador to the US, Emmanuel Victor Smith, highlighted the importance of efficient port systems to Ghana’s export ambitions.

“Modern and efficient ports are critical to expanding Ghana’s exports, especially cocoa and cocoa-derived products, and to improving value addition and competitiveness in global markets,” he said.

Abla Dzifa Gomashie said Ghana was keen on deepening cooperation in maritime-related sectors as part of its broader blue economy agenda.

“Ghana is committed to developing its blue economy, with particular interest in maritime tourism, fisheries, coastal development, and marine-related industries that can drive sustainable economic growth,” she said.

She noted that lessons from advanced port operations such as Philadelphia’s could help inform Ghana’s efforts to modernise its maritime infrastructure and unlock new economic opportunities.

The visit formed part of Ghana’s wider economic diplomacy drive to strengthen trade relations, attract investment, and enhance logistics and maritime cooperation with strategic partners.

The engagement ended with a mutual commitment by both sides to continue discussions and explore practical areas of collaboration to advance trade, port development, and sustainable economic growth.
