Minister in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu has stated that the GH₵1-per-litre Energy Sector Shortfall and Debt Repayment Levy has been effectively utilised and has contributed significantly to stabilising Ghana’s electricity supply.
The energy levy, introduced to raise additional funds for fuel purchases for thermal power plants and to settle outstanding sector debts, has faced calls for transparency from stakeholders. The government has, however, defended its use of the proceeds, emphasising that the levy has supported efforts to ensure a more reliable power supply across the country.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Wednesday, January 14, Kwakye Ofosu noted that when the current administration assumed responsibility for the power sector, challenges with electricity stability were widespread.
He said the sector has now achieved a level of reliability that has reassured consumers.
“What is clear is that it certainly has been put to good use and has contributed significantly to achieving stability in the power sector.
“When we took over, there were challenges with electricity stability and I think all of us can attest that for several months now, electricity has been stable. We have not experienced the outages that many had feared would occur,” Kwakye Ofosu said.
