The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has announced the formation of a Technical Working Group (TWG) to investigate safety concerns over the use of converted Toyota Voxy vehicles for commercial passenger transport, particularly on long-distance routes.
According to NRSA, a significant number of these vehicles were originally manufactured as right-hand drive (RHD) and later converted to left-hand drive (LHD) after importation.
Reports indicate that some of the converted vehicles may experience handling and stability challenges, especially at higher speeds and on curves, raising concerns about their roadworthiness and safety when used for carrying passengers.
In response to the potential risk to public safety, and in line with its mandate to promote safer road use and reduce traffic accidents, the NRSA has established the TWG to thoroughly investigate these concerns and provide recommendations for regulatory action.
While the Technical Working Group conducts its investigations, the NRSA has cautioned motorists and the travelling public to exercise heightened vigilance when using Toyota Voxy vehicles, particularly those that have undergone RHD-to-LHD conversion.
“This advisory is issued purely as a precautionary public safety measure and does not constitute a final determination on the safety or roadworthiness of any vehicle category,” the statement added.
The NRSA also urged road users to make informed decisions in the interest of personal safety and to remain alert when using or patronising commercial passenger vehicles.
