Residents at Adidome have raised concerns about an uncovered manhole located behind the town’s old toilet facility near its lorry park in the Central Tongu District, saying it could pose safety challenges to users of the area.

Mr Guggisberg Fiagbenu, the Assembly Member of the Adidome Central Electoral Area, in an open letter to Mr Dodzi Addison Mornyuie, the District Chief Executive (DCE), drew attention to the condition of the facility and appealed for the necessary steps to be taken to enhance public safety.

He noted that the manhole remained exposed and without protective barriers, creating potential risks for commuters, traders and visitors, particularly during periods of poor visibility.

Mr Fiagbenu also observed that refuse was sometimes deposited into the open manhole by some members of the public despite the presence of waste containers nearby, a situation he said required attention.

He, therefore, appealed to the Central Tongu District Assembly to consider demolishing the disused structure to allow for the manhole to be properly covered, while making budgetary provision for the construction of a modern public toilet facility to help address sanitation needs at the lorry park.

Some residents who spoke with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) described the lorry park as an important commercial and transport hub and expressed hope that the concerns raised would receive the needed attention.

They said addressing the situation would enhance safety, especially for children, the elderly and first-time users of the facility, and contribute to improved sanitation in the area.

Responding to the concerns, Mr Mornyuie, acknowledged the petition and assured that the Assembly was examining the matter.

Mr Mornyuie said the Assembly would work with its Works Department and other relevant stakeholders to assess the situation and take appropriate measures, adding that public safety and sanitation remained key priorities of the Assembly.

He indicated that efforts were ongoing to improve sanitation infrastructure across the district, and that the issues raised would be considered within the Assembly’s development and sanitation programmes.
