Breakaway from NPP not an option for Ken Agyapong — Rocky Obeng

Former Western North Regional Minister and a member of the Kennedy Agyapong campaign team, Joojo Rocky Obeng, has firmly rejected suggestions that the former flagbearer hopeful should break away from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to contest the 2028 presidential election as an independent candidate.

His comments follow calls from a section of Kennedy Agyapong’s supporters urging the former Assin Central MP to form a “third force” after losing the NPP’s 2026 presidential primary.

In a Facebook post on Friday, February 13, 2026, Mr. Obeng described the idea as “politically ridiculous” and completely off-limits.

“Defeat is painful, but a breakaway ‘Third Force’ is NOT AN OPTION,” he wrote, adding, “The idea of a ‘third force’ is politically ridiculous and completely off-limits as far as I am concerned. The same must go for anyone who genuinely wanted Hon Ken to win and be on the ticket of our party, the New Patriotic Party.”

Mr. Obeng argued that Ghana’s political history under the Fourth Republic demonstrates that winning a presidential election without the backing of a major political party, such as the NPP or the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is highly improbable.

“I find it awfully interesting the idea that Hon Ken can win a national election without the strength of either our party, NPP, or a national party like the NDC. That is an overstretch,” he stated.

According to Mr. Obeng, while emotions remain high among loyalists following the presidential primary, the party must be given space to reflect and continue with internal electoral reforms.

“Everyone, including our flagbearer, knows that we need to cleanse ourselves from the excesses and the regrettable utterances that came with our primaries,” he said, urging supporters not to indulge in suggestions that could undermine reconciliation efforts within the party.

Mr Obeng also shifted attention to what he described as pressing national issues, particularly challenges in the cocoa sector.

“What is on the table now is NDC’s mess of the cocoa sector and the bad treatment they’ve put millions of cocoa farmers through this cocoa season,” he stated.
