The Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts has announced that the Government of Ghana is encouraging all Ghanaians, as well as friends of Ghana at home and abroad, to dedicate every Wednesday to wearing Fugu (Batakari) in its various forms and designs.

The declaration, signed by Minister Ablah Dzifa Gomashie on February 10, is aimed at preserving, promoting, and celebrating Ghana’s rich cultural heritage, while projecting the nation’s identity with pride on the global stage.

“On behalf of the Government and the good people of Ghana, and in furtherance of our collective commitment to preserve, promote, and celebrate Ghana’s rich cultural heritage, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts wishes to inform the general public of Government’s decision to encourage all Ghanaians, as well as friends of Ghana, home and abroad, to dedicate every Wednesday to the wearing of Fugu (Batakari), in all its diverse forms, designs, and expressions, complemented by its distinctive and beautiful accessories,” the statement said.

According to the Ministry, the weekly celebration of Fugu is expected to generate significant social and economic benefits across the country.

These benefits include empowering local weavers, designers, artisans, and traders along the value chain, while expanding business opportunities, employment creation, and commercial activity nationwide.

The government believes that a collective embrace of Fugu will help strengthen national unity, stimulate the creative economy, and serve as a visible symbol of Ghana’s cultural confidence and self-expression.
