Mustapha Gbande, Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has commended the Ghana Police Service and party supporters for their conduct during the Ayawaso East parliamentary primary held on Saturday, February 7, 2026.
Speaking after the exercise on the Channel One Newsroom, Mr Gbande praised the police for what he described as a high level of professionalism, noting that the primary was conducted without any security incidents. He said the calm atmosphere contributed to a peaceful and orderly voting process.
He also expressed appreciation to NDC supporters, particularly branch executives who participated in the voting, for conducting themselves responsibly despite their support for different candidates.
According to him, the level of discipline and comradeship displayed reflects the unity and maturity within the party.
Mr Gbande said the party is pleased with the overall outcome of the primary and is confident that all aspirants and their supporters can now be brought together to focus on the bigger task ahead. He stressed that unity after the internal contest is crucial as the party prepares for the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election.
The comments come after Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, emerged winner of the closely contested primary. Baba Jamal secured 431 votes, narrowly defeating Hajia Amina Adam, who polled 399 votes. Mohammed Ramme obtained 88 votes, Dr Yakubu Azindow had 45 votes, while Mohammed Najib received 1 vote.
With the primary concluded peacefully, the NDC says it is encouraged by the conduct of all stakeholders and is ready to rally behind its candidate ahead of the by-election.
