Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has underscored the strategic importance of Ghana–China cooperation in strengthening the country’s energy security, citing the contribution of the Sunon Asogli Thermal Power Station to stabilising power supply during challenging periods.

Speaking at the 2026 Sunon Asogli Chinese New Year celebration on Monday, February 16, 2026, to mark the Spring Festival and the Year of the Horse, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang expressed Ghana’s deep appreciation for the role the thermal power plant has played in reinforcing the national grid, particularly at times when the country faced power constraints.

She noted that energy security remains central to Ghana’s industrialisation drive and long-term economic resilience, stressing that reliable power supply is a prerequisite for productivity, investment, and sustainable growth.

The Vice President used the occasion to reflect on the longstanding diplomatic relationship between Ghana and China, which she said has evolved beyond formal ties into substantive cooperation in education, trade, industry, and technical exchange.

While acknowledging the infrastructure gains from bilateral cooperation, she emphasised that development must go beyond physical projects.

“Development is not built by infrastructure alone, but also by people, cultures and mutual respect,” she stated, adding that enduring partnerships must be anchored in clarity of purpose, accountability and alignment with Ghana’s national development priorities.

As Ghana works to strengthen its industrial base and secure its energy future, the Vice President reiterated the country’s openness to partnerships that are transparent, fair, and mutually beneficial.

The Spring Festival celebration, she added, provided an opportunity for renewal and reflection, expressing confidence in Ghana’s direction in the new year and its commitment to building resilient institutions, sustainable infrastructure, and shared prosperity.
