President John Dramani Mahama has announced that construction of the country’s first batch of Farmer Service Centres will begin this year, marking what he described as a major step toward transforming Ghana’s agricultural sector.
The President made the disclosure while delivering his State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Friday, February 27, outlining his administration’s renewed focus on strengthening support systems for farmers, particularly smallholder producers who form the backbone of the agricultural economy.
According to President Mahama, the initiative is designed to address long-standing challenges confronting farmers, including limited access to mechanised services, post-harvest losses, inadequate storage facilities, and gaps in extension services.
He indicated that the centres will serve as one-stop hubs providing critical services aimed at improving productivity and reducing production costs.
“The first eleven farmer service centres will commence this year and will provide affordable access to land preparation, harvesting, storage, extension services and equipment leasing especially for smallholder farmers.
“In the next two weeks, I am going to cut sod for the first farmer service in the Afram Plains. Agric extension remains the backbone of productivity and to address the current gap between farmers and extension officers, 540 motorbikes have been acquired to improve extension coverage.”
