Indigenes of Sunyani in the Bono Region have welcomed with excitement the amicable resolution of a chieftaincy dispute between Odeefour Ogyemansan Korkor II and Nana Akosua Dua Asor Sika Brayie II, the Paramount Chief and Queen Mother of the Sunyani Traditional Area, respectively.
Residents expressed appreciation to the Government for its intervention, particularly the Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mr Ahmed Ibrahim, and the Bono Regional Minister, Mr Joseph Akwaboa, whose mediation efforts helped bring the matter to a peaceful conclusion.
The dispute, which had lingered for nearly a year, centred on the rightful occupant of the Sunyani Paramount stool following the death of the late Paramount Chief, Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri II, in 2022. The purported enstoolment of Odeefour Ogyemansan Korkor II triggered legal action and deep divisions among sub-chiefs and sub-queens within the traditional area, slowing down development activities.
The impasse was resolved after a meeting held on Monday, February 2, 2026, involving the Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister, the Paramount Queen Mother, the Paramount Chief, and some sub-chiefs.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, John Kusi, a native of the area, said the resolution had brought relief to residents.
“The resolution of the dispute has relieved us because the situation was causing fear and panic,” he said. “Now that there is peace, there is also going to be progress in Sunyani.”
He noted that chieftaincy disputes often derail development and expressed hope that the restoration of harmony would accelerate growth in the municipality.
Another resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, appealed to kingmakers and royal families to ensure that rightful candidates were enstooled whenever a traditional stool became vacant, to avoid future conflicts.
Other residents told the GNA that the restoration of peace would help attract investment and promote socio-economic development in the Sunyani Municipality.
