The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has called for a deeper understanding of the history of slavery and a renewed commitment to human dignity, equality, and justice.
Speaking at a high-level reparatory justice event at the United Nations General Assembly in New York City on Tuesday, March 24, the Minister said:
“Remembrance carries responsibility. Honouring victims of this tragedy requires more than recalling the past. It calls on us to recognise the humanity that was denied to them.
Deepening our understanding of this history and strengthening our commitment to building a world where dignity, equality and justice are upheld for all people.”
President John Dramani Mahama led the Ghanaian delegation to the event.
The visit forms part of Ghana’s participation in activities marking the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, an observance aimed at declaring “the trafficking of enslaved Africans and the racialised chattel enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity.”
