The National Chief Imam, Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has urged Ghanaians to use the country’s Independence anniversary as an opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to constitutional democracy, economic growth, interfaith harmony and national unity.
The revered Islamic leader extended congratulations to the government and people of Ghana as the nation marked its 69th Independence Day on March 6, 2026.
In a message to commemorate the occasion, the Chief Imam emphasised the importance of strengthening the country’s democratic institutions while promoting peaceful coexistence among citizens of different religious backgrounds.
“In the words of the Grand Imam, the Independence Celebration should be another opportunity for us Ghanaians to reaffirm our commitment to the consolidation of constitutional democracy, economic prosperity, interfaith harmony, and national unity,” he said.
The Chief Imam also noted that developments in the global community — including rising authoritarian tendencies, military conflicts and the spread of violent extremism — should reinforce Ghana’s determination to remain united and resilient.
Reflecting on the country’s history, he described the colonial era as a period of hardship, stressing that the sacrifices made by earlier generations should inspire citizens to protect the freedoms and progress the nation has achieved.
According to him, the Independence Day celebration should serve not only as a reminder of past struggles but also as a call to safeguard democratic governance and national cohesion.
His Eminence concluded the message with prayers for divine guidance and blessings for John Dramani Mahama, the government and the people of Ghana as the nation continues its pursuit of development, peace and unity.
