Ghana must move from rhetoric to concrete action by prioritising local food systems and rural development as a national strategy, the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, has said.
Her remarks come amid growing concerns over Ghana’s food security and the need to strengthen local supply chains amid global economic pressures.
Speaking at the “Back to Your Village” Food Festival held at Efua Sutherland Children’s Park on Saturday, March 28, 2026, the Minister highlighted the event’s role in reconnecting Ghanaians with the country’s agricultural roots.
“This festival reminds us that our villages and rural communities remain the backbone of Ghana’s food system. From our farmers and fishers to processors and traders, these communities continue to sustain our nation’s food security and nutrition,” she stated.
She emphasised that the concept of “Back to Your Village” must extend beyond nostalgia and be embraced as a practical development strategy.
“We are at a critical moment where ‘Back to Your Village’ should not just be nostalgia — it must be strategy. It must mean promoting local food production and consumption, supporting smallholder farming and artisanal fishers, preserving traditional food knowledge and practices, and building resilient food systems for generations yet unborn,” she said.
