GEXIM’s decade-long support strengthens Ghana’s economy – Prof. Opoku-Agyemang

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has commended the Ghana Export-Import Bank (GEXIM) for what she describes as a significant milestone, marking a decade of supporting Ghana’s export development and industrial growth.

Speaking at the Bank’s 10th anniversary international conference in Accra on Wednesday, March 25, she noted that the anniversary presents an opportunity for both reflection and renewed focus.

“10 years is a significant accomplishment. Well done. This is a time for pride, reflection, and renewed purpose,” she stated, adding that the gathering of policymakers, financiers, and private sector players comes at a critical time for shaping Ghana’s economic future.

The Vice President traced the establishment of GEXIM in 2016 under President John Dramani Mahama, explaining that the move was driven by the need to break Ghana’s long-standing cycle of exporting raw materials while importing finished goods.

According to her, the Bank was created to serve as a dedicated national institution to support production, value addition and export development, with the broader goal of strengthening Ghana’s industrial base and improving foreign exchange earnings.

Over the past decade, she said GEXIM has played a meaningful role in advancing export diversification, stimulating industrial activity and enhancing the competitiveness of Ghanaian businesses.

She highlighted the Bank’s support for key sectors including agriculture, agro-processing, manufacturing and services, noting that these interventions have contributed to the growth of non-traditional exports.

“This is proof that when a country invests deliberately in export finance and industrial support, it gives its producers and entrepreneurs a stronger chance to grow and succeed,” she added.
